INTRO TO PALEO

Want to learn the basics of a paleolithic approach to health? Don't have time to read a bunch of books and blogs? Come join John and Melissa for an introduction to paleo.

This evening is designed for anyone doing the Paleo Challenge. We'll answer the following questions:

– What is the paleo diet? What foods are allowed, and why?
– How can I start? What are some tips and tricks to successfully adopt a healthier way of eating?
– What does evolutionary science have to say about the original human diet?
– What does modern science have to say about paleo? What is the paleo perspective on major diseases, like heart disease, cancer, digestive problems, and acne?

We aren't going to be working from a script, and we expect this to be very interactive…so bring your questions. This will not entail dinner, so you may want to grab something beforehand. I expect this to run for two hours: 8:30pm – 10:30pm.

We're going to charge $5 because space is limited, and it prevents flaking. All proceeds go to Eating Paleo in NYC meetup and event costs.

Nothing cures a New Years hangover like a polar bear swim. Come join thousands of people on New Year's Day to jump into the Atlantic. Cold exposure is an excellent acute stressor with health benefits: adaptation to the cold, improved immune system, and you get a great adrenaline rush and metabolic response. Followed by music and hanging out on the Coney Island boardwalk.

A lot of people wear crazy stuff.

I forgot how much it costs — it's something like $25 for charity.

Directions:
– Take the D, N, F, or Q to Coney Island – Stillwell Avenue. Plan for an hour and fifteen minutes if coming from Manhattan.
– Walk down to the boardwalk

Wise Traditions

A couple of us are interested in going to the Weston A. Price Foundation's (promotes full-fat real food and local agriculture) annual conference. The theme this year is Food Politics and there will be many workshops on traditional diets and cooking as well.

Meatshare III: Lamb, chicken, and pork

Meatshare 3 comes from the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. Farmer Judy and her husband have followed evolutionary nutrition for eight years. They apply that same philosophy to their animals. All animals are humanely raised in pristine natural environments. Judy works with her butcher to produce products free from additives and to preserve all the healthy delicious fat.

The lambs are 100% grass-fed and pastured. Being of the Tunis breed, they are descended from ancient fat-tailed sheep from the Middle East. Tunis are known for their flavorful meat and delicious fat.

The pigs are Tamworth, a heritage breed known for delicious bacon. They are raised in the forest except for jaunts in the fields to glean leftover crops like cabbage.

Poulet Rouge chickens are free range and unlike the miserable Cornish chickens you find at the grocery store, full of delicious juicy flavor.

Professor Loren Cordain speaking at CrossFit Long Island City

Don’t miss this opportunity to hear one of the world’s leading authorities speak on the Paleo Diet. Loren Cordain, author of The Paleo Diet and numerous academic papers on the subject, is speaking at CrossFit Long Island City.

Dr. Loren Cordain Nutrition Lecture
When: Saturday, October 2, 12pm-3pm
Where: CrossFit Long Island City
Cost: $60

Details, directions, registration all here.

Topics:

– The Origins and Evolution of the Western Diet: Health Implications for the 21st Century.
– Implementing the Paleo Diet with Contemporary Foods.

Professor Loren Cordain, author of “The Paleo Diet” and “The Paleo Diet for Athletes” is widely acknowledged as a leading expert on the diet of our Paleolithic ancestors. In numerous publications in the world’s best scientific journals, he has documented the dramatic health benefits of eating a diet consistent with human genetic evolution and our ancestral, Paleolithic diet. Learn how a diet based on lean meats, seafood, fresh fruits, and fresh vegetables can lead to ideal body weight, optimum health, and peak athletic performance.

The Paleo Diet is a way of eating in the modern age that best mimics diets of our hunter-gatherer ancestors – combinations of lean meats, seafood, vegetables, fruits, and nuts. By eating the foods that we are genetically adapted to eat, followers of the Paleo Diet are naturally lean, have acne-free skin, improved athletic performance, and are experiencing relief from numerous metabolic-related and autoimmune diseases.

Featuring cutting-edge nutritional information generated by his research group as well as pertinent information from medicine and anthropology, Dr. Cordain’s talks are educational and entertaining and feature early photographs of hunter-gatherers in the field, informative figures, and colorful graphs outlining the latest nutritional studies on diet and health.

Cost – $50 (CFLIC members); $60 (non-members)

Release Party for Robb Wolf’s The Paleo Solution

I am pleased to announce a special event.

Come join our guest of honor, Robb Wolf, for a rooftop party celebrating the release of his book, The Paleo Solution. See Robb's bio below, but in short, Robb is one of the most knowledgeable people on human nutrition AND is a world class strength and conditioning coach. If you've listened to his podcasts or been to his seminars, you know his book is going to be great.

Start: 8:30pm
Book talk: 9:30pm
Party until ???
Cost: $30 per person (includes signed copy of the book + alcohol + snacks from Wooly Pigs)

NOTE: If you can't attend the party but would still like a signed book — or if you will be at the party and would like to buy more than one signed book — I will be setting up another meetup event to do so. You can pick them up at the party, or you can pick them up from me at a later date if you can't attend the party. Let's get Robb's book on the best-seller list…and buying the book through this event will count towards that.

NOTE: As much as I would like to squeeze everyone into my apartment, 150 is the absolute max capacity (and that's pushing it). So we will only be able to accommodate those who have RSVP'ed and paid up front!

This is going to be sick

John

Introduction to Paleo: Principles, benefits, and getting started

Want to learn the basics of a paleolithic approach to health? Don't have time to read a bunch of books and blogs? Come join John, Melissa and Christian for an introduction to paleo.

This evening is designed for beginners, skeptics, and newbies. We'll answer the following questions:

– What does evolutionary science have to say about the original human diet?
– Which foods do we generally eat? Which do we avoid?
– What does modern science have to say about paleo? What is the paleo perspective on major diseases, like heart disease, cancer, digestive problems, and acne?
– How can I start? What are some tips and tricks to successfully adopt a healthier way of eating?

We aren't going to be working from a script, and we expect this to be very interactive…so bring your questions.

Since space is limited (at my apartment), we are going to give priority to beginners and new folks. If we have enough interest, we could look into finding a bar that would host us. This will not entail dinner, so you may want to grab something beforehand. I expect this to run for two hours: 8:30pm – 10:30pm.

Cow Share: 280 pounds of grass-fed beefy deliciousness

Cow share time.

Last time I bought grass-fed beef from Glynwood, I told Ken, the farmer, that our group could tackle a steer. Well, the steer is in, and we own half of it. Hanging weight of 558 pounds, so that means 280 for our half (a little higher than what it ends up being). And it's ready to be picked up.

We're going to start with 20 shares. Each share will contain 10 pounds at an average price of $6 per pound. Shares will be an assortment of cuts. Everyone will get some ground beef. Plus a few “medium tier” cuts. Plus a few “upper tier” cuts. We will arrange a group pick-up date on Saturday, August 28th, and if you want to trade with other people, you can certainly do so. If you can't come, then we can arrange another time to swing by my place and get it.

** This price is subject to change slightly. I don't know the exact price per pound until we see how many pounds we get and what the costs are associated with picking it up. But I tried to factor that in and I think it's unlikely it will go any higher. $6 per pound is a good price for grass-fed ground beef, but you'd also be getting higher end cuts — the benefits of going in on half a cow. **

If you have an SUV and want to help us pick it up, let us know. The group will cover gas and expenses, you'd be assured of a share, and you'd get to see Glynwood. It's about 1.5 hours – 2 hours away.

Cuts:
ground beef
stew beef
boneless chuck roasts
rib steaks on inch thick
shoulder clod pot roast
beef short ribs
t-bone steaks one inch thick
porterhouse steaks one inch thick
sirloin steaks one inch thick
top round London Broil
top round roast about three pounds
bottom round roast about four pounds
eye round roast about two and a half pounds
sirloin tip steaks one inch thick

Mastodon Supper Club: Featuring Mangalitsa pork from Debragga

Come feast like it's 10,003 BC on the Lower East Side. Bring some meaty mastodon ribs, fresh berries, marinated zucchini, or just a bottle of wine. Let me know when you sign up what you plan to bring.

Featuring braised Mangalitsa pork belly from Wooly Pigs via Debragga, New York's Butcher. Mangalitsa are a rare breed of pigs, also known as wooly pigs for their thick hairy coats. They are bred for their highly prized fat, unlike many American breeds that are selected for leanness. The result = fatty deliciousness!

Hunting pursuits will be discussed, meat will be feasted upon, and wine will be poured (but not too much since it is a work night after all).
