Archery & Asian Markets

Come out to Flushing, Queens for one hour of archery instruction at Queens Archery. Whether you are preparing for the upcoming bow-hunting season or just want to be badass, learn some archery basics and get some practice.

Afterwards, I'd like to check out some of Flushing's Asian food and markets. Flushing has incredible Korean food and some really interesting tea/vegetable/fish markets as well. For some inspiration, here is Anthony Bourdain's journey to Flushing. It's Chinatown on steroids.

Berry-picking, Hiking, and Swimming in Harriman State Park

Get ready to hike, swim and forage for berries — while they are in season!

Vlad Averbukh will lead our group to Harriman Park, the second largest NY state park. Located only 30 miles north of the city, Harriman is known for its wildlife and impressive views. There are also lots of delicious blueberries and huckleberries. While we won't be doing any deer hunting (this time!), there'll be plenty of ants for the insectivores among us. For those who never hiked before, I will explain how to read trail markers and tell you about some great places to visit in the park. There is also a beautiful lake for swimming if people want to cool off from the hiking. Harriman is an absolutely fantastic place that I'm sure you'd want to come back to again too, since hunting season starts in late fall.

UPDATE
Weather looking good for Saturday, 85 and sunny. Since Penn Station is a confusing place for those who've never been there, we will meet at 8:45 on the street, corner of 31 St & 8 Ave. You should plan to arrive at Penn Station around 8:30 to allow for subway delays. If for some reason you can't find us, or if we already left to board the train, you can try to meet us on the 9:14 train and buy your ticket there, but that's more expensive. Round trip to Tuxedo costs $18.50 if you buy from ticket machine. If you're coming from Jersey, you could meet us at Secaucus Junction where we'll transfer on the 9:31 train to Tuxedo, please indicate so when you RSVP. Drivers, please indicate if you're driving so we know to expect you at Tuxedo.

RSVP list will close at 6 PM Friday. Please update your RSVP if you can't make it. I'll email my number to all who RSVPed on Friday night in case you need to call me. Please be on time as we will not be able to wait for you, you must meet us at 8:45 in Penn Station or 10:17 in Tuxedo. There's very poor phone reception in and around Harriman.

TRAIN
We will meet outside Penn Station, corner of 31 St and 8 Ave, at 8:45 AM. Please arrive on time as there may be a line to buy tickets. We'll take the 9:14 AM train to Secaucus, then transfer on train to Tuxedo.

CAR
Those who wish to drive can meet us at Tuxedo at 10:17 AM when our train arrives. Address is 240 Route 17, Tuxedo, NY, there's free parking by the train station on weekends.

RETURN
On the way back, we'll take the 6:40 PM train, arriving at 8 PM in NYC. Those wishing to leave early can take the trail back to the station for the 4:20 PM train, arriving in NYC at 5:30 PM.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Once we arrive in Tuxedo, we'll begin on the trails. We'll later stop by the lake where we'll eat and swim. I expect us to cover about 8 miles total, exact route is TBD. I'll have a compass and a trail map with me. But while I'm a frequent hiker and berry forager, I would not call myself an expert in this field. So anyone who joins us will be responsible for their own safety.

Things to bring with you: lunch, 2 litters of water, hiking shoes, swimsuit if you plan on going into the lake, camera, bug spray, sunscreen. We'll have a map of Harriman, first aid kit, bear spray, but if you have any and want to bring it, feel free.

Going to be awesome!

Paleo Happy Hour

Join us at the back room of Jimmy's No. 43, an excellent little bar in the East Village with great food and wine. Jimmy's hosts CSAs, Slow Food events (including Jackson Landers), and yes, Jimmy's does have a few good beers on tap.

Not a quiz night tonight — but see you there for a happy hour.

This is an informal meetup, so we aren't doing anything special here except hanging out and eating delicious food. We might see each other, we might not.

Paleo Kitchen Skillshare!

Get excited for our first Paleo Kitchen Skillshare! At this workshop several experts in paleo cooking will share skills that can help you make nourishing and delicious paleo meals.

If you have a skill to share, volunteer to be a workshop leader!

So far the workshops are:
Real World Paleo Cooking Prep at the begining + between other workshops finishing dishes. With Sarah Davies.
Learn how to prepare simple, gluten/grain-free and added chemical-free dishes that yield two meals per day for the whole week! We will prepare mandarin chicken with potato (or roots) and zucchini, cucumber salad, split pea soup, and a simple candy. This demonstration will be hands on and use real quantities (for those of us who are challenged in choosing proper portions).
Using Your Bones: Nourishing bone stocks and marrow 30 minutes by Melissa from Hunt.Gather.Love
Don't throw away your bones! Learn how to use bone stock and marrow, plus vegetables tops to create a delicious soup.
Rare Minerals: Iodine, calcium, and potassium 10 minutes
Many new paleo dieters have trouble getting these important minerals in their diets. Discuss their benefits and then learn and simple and easy ways to get them like nori wraps and dashi.
John's Favorite Vegetable Dishes

This isn't a full meal, but you will get to sample every dish we make. There will be plenty of time to meet and greet, bring a bottle of wine if you like.

The cost of the workshop covers meetup expenses and materials

Come meet other cavepeople and have some great paleo food and drink at the Sanocki brothers' apartment on Union Square. This is a potluck, so cook up your best paleo recipe. If you don't have paleo skillz in the kitchen, maybe just bring some red wine….

We'll be drinking Paleo Punch, challenging each other to various feats of strength (I have a very heavy coffee table), and causing overall caveman chaos. There is plenty of room for everyone — bring your friends or make some new ones!

Lamb Meatshare and Tour

Come with us to beautiful Cold Spring, NY to Glynwood Farm to pick up a lamb that was processed just for us. At this sustainable historic farm, you will learn about what makes grass-fed and finished animals special in nourishing human health, the environment, and small family farmers.

During the tour you will get tips from the farmer about how to cook lamb and you will have your choice of lamb cuts for $5 a pound which is a great deal! Lamb like this sells for $13 a pound at Union Square Greenmarket. This is a great way to get your paleo diet running! I am a member of several meat shares and it has made my paleo diet so much easier to have a stock of healthy food in my freezer. It's also a great way to improve your cooking repertoire and learn about different cuts of meat! John Durant, Melissa McEwen, and Vlad Averbukh will provide tips for eating and living paleo! If you want we can plan a special dinner and cooking workshop with our lamb.

A Japanese film crew will accompany us to film a segment about New York trends!

How we will get there: You can take a Metro North train and then a taxi, but make sure to indicate you want to do this on the form so we can arrange a taxi in advance. If you are driving let us know if you would do a rideshare. The farm is about an hour north of NYC.

You must put down a deposit of $20 for the meat as a commitment…so you will get a minimum of four lbs of lamb and you can sign up for more if you want it.
If you want to bring a guest, please email me first mgmcewen @ gmail.com so I can adjust the numbers
If you are interested in the lamb, but can't come, RSVP anyway and then email me with how many lbs you want, what cuts are your favorite, and when you can get your lamb. mgmcewen @ gmail.com

Directions and info for tomorrow
Hey everyone! I hope you are excited about going to the farm tomorrow, if you are going. We are going to be at the farm at about 10:20. Sorry about the time change, but the train schedule worked out that way. For those of us taking the train, meet at Grand Central main clock (it's the big huge clock) at 8:10 sharp…the Hudson line only runs so often on weekends and we don't want to miss it.

If you can provide a ride for us from the train station to the farm, please let us know! The farm is about 11 mins by car from the station.

For those driving, check out Glynwood's driving directions
http://www.glynwood.o

Please bring cash to pay for the lamb if you want more than 4 lbs or haven't made a deposit. The farmer says he also has pastured pork and chicken for sale. Bring a cooler if you have one…the meat will be frozen when we pick it up.

See you there!

Important – Tomorrow – Paleo Fitness Meetup

Hi all,

Welcome to all the new members — we cracked 200!

Late notice, but we're going to have a fitness event tomorrow for anyone so inclined. Plus some media and reporters present. Here are the details:

– Erwan Le Corre is back in town, and we're doing a barefoot/VFF run across the Brooklyn Bridge. Awesome opportunity to get running tips from a real barefoot pro.

– A TV crew from NHK, Japanese public TV, will be there filming. They are doing a segment on innovative New Yorkers, and this is part of it. You are innovative. Plus a reporter from the main Swedish newspaper. Plus a reporter from CBC radio. Great publicity! Come be a part of it (if you are camera shy, you clearly don't have to be in any shots you don't want to).

– We are going to do some running, and then stop in the park over in Brooklyn for a special MovNat session led by Erwan. So if you're interested in a great lesson in some natural movement, tomorrow is the day. (And it's free…usually these things cost $$$.) All fitness levels welcome.

– The schedule is going to be a bit up in the air, depending on the reporters, and we may have to stop and start and pause, or whatever, but it's going to be fun.

– The plan is to meet at the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge (on it) at 9AM sharp. My cell phone is[masked] should you need to get in touch or find us.

– It's going to be chilly and maybe snowing a bit, so bring something warm, particularly if you're not used to the cold.

Look forward to seeing you out there,

John
