HERE IS THE NEW HIKE INFO

Old Page Mill Trail, Skyline Ridge Preserve

When: Sunday, January 23, 2011
Start time: 10:30am
End time: 3pm-ish

Location: Old Page Mill Trail, Skyline Ridge Preserve
Where to Meet: Russian Ridge Preserve, main parking lot
(at Page Mill Road, Skyline Blvd. and Alpine Road)
http://www.openspace….

Hike Distance: 3 – 4 miles
Hike Duration: 4+ hours

Here is a description of our hike with Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District docent, Steve Warner:

Mushroom walk at Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve to observe the mycorrhizal and saprophytic relationships of fungi.

Moderately easy out-and-back along the Old Page Mill Trail (total 3+ miles). We will discover and gather together to discuss what we find in the winter forest (total time 4+ hours).

Fungi are mysterious organisms as they are greatly affected by weather patterns and are very unpredictable as to exactly when or where they will come up. We do know that there is a distinct relationship between certain trees and certain mycelium so knowing the particular habitat will help know what types of fungi could be present.

Throughout the rainy season and after the first 2” of fall rains comes a flush of gold bountiful to all.

Again …. our hike will be on the Old Page Mill Trail in the Skyline Ridge Preserve, adjacent to Russian Ridge Preserve.
http://www.openspace….

Note: the Midpen Open Space hikes are educational and are not meant for foraging.

CARPOOL/CARAVAN:
I will leave my home at 9:15 am, have one other person riding with me, with 3 seats open, let me know if you want to ride along…. and/or if you want to caravan up there.

LUNCH:
Being this 4-hour hike is right at noontime I encourage you to bring food and drink. We'll pause at 12:30 or so for a bit to fortify ourselves.

$10 raw-shroom lunch:
I'll make easy-to-eat shroomy foods (see below), and we'll do the exchange at the beginning of the hike (the bag of goodies and the payment, please bring exact currency, $10, check or cash) so it'd be best for us to arrive a bit early. Contact me directly if you want a raw lunch and please include any foods that you are avoiding. Bring your own drink.

– Mushroom and onion flat bread mini sandwiches with almond cream cheese filling, dried black olives, chopped fennel and coriander.
– Sun-dried tomato flax crackers with tamari soaked mushroom topenade.
– Citrus and nut salad with Black Truffle Oil in a lettuce wrap.

BTW – This event is still planned by the Midpen Open Space Dist:

Lunch Strenuous Hike

Search the forest floor and surrounding environs with docents Chris MacIntosh, Paul Billig and Lynn Jackson to learn to notice new things as you hike in winter: the wonderful world of fungi. You may find many, or none at all… every year, every month is different. This non-technical, 7-mile walk through different habitats gives you a chance to find a wide variety – fungi come in all sizes, shapes, and colors and often pass unnoticed and unappreciated.

Where to meet:
Meet at the main preserve parking lot (Whittemore Gulch entrance) located on Skyline Boulevard next to the now closed Kings Mountain Country Store. The parking lot is 4.5 miles south of Highway 92, or 8.1 miles north of Highway 84.

“May I be Frank” Dec 10th: A screening & Raw Food Event (with director & Frank)

A film screening, meet the film maker and raw food event.

MAY I BE FRANK

First of all… a note from me, Joni, your organizer:

The Oakland Raw Food MeetUp group is hosting this event in Oakland. This is a prepaid event, so, I'm posting it here on our group for those who want to go, yet are not members of the Oakland group. This way, you can RSVP w/payment through our group. I'll collect the funds through my PayPal acct and will give a check to Darcy, the organizer of the Oakland group, the night of the event.

Here's the Oakland MeetUp group link if you want to join that group, sign up and pay there…..
http://www.meetup.com

Here's the info from the Oakland's calendar …

May I be Frank: A screening and Raw Food Event (with director and Frank)

Dec. 10th at 6:15 p.m.
2141 Broadway (19th Street BART station)
Oakland, CA 94612

Cost of admission is $10, prepayment is required.

Frank and the director Gregg Marks will be there to answer questions.

Ever since I first saw this film last year I have been trying to find a way to show it at our meetup. So it’s been a full year since I’ve been letting new members know we hope to have it.

“May I be Frank” is an inspiring film about how a man completely transformed his life in 42 days on raw food. It was created by chefs from Café Gratitude and one of them, Gregg Marks, and Frank will be on hand to answer questions about it. Yes Frank will be there too!

I’m so happy that we are able to show it because I’ve seen few films that document such a transformation, much less one that occurred through a raw food diet. Frank did so much more than simply kick the cooked food habit. He embarked on a new life’s journey with honesty and a willingness to confront all that stood between him and his possibilities. But the film is more than Frank’s story, it’s a story of the community that Café Gratitude was able to offer him and the unbelievable possibilities that are available to us all if we are as motivated to change as Frank evidently was. Obviously I can’t say enough about this movie and I hope everyone will come for it.

DINNER will be offered:
We are hosting this film in collaboration with Lisa Books William and her Vegetarian meetup in the Tri-Valley area. She will be offering a wonderful array of food possibilities at an affordable price.
Although the complete menu will be posted later, for now I can tell you that she will have:

a salad plate (a wonderful slaw and two other salads) and chips, dip
and a veggie plate (with kale chips, other chips and dips and/or pates).

$7 a piece

Drinks:

hibiscus/ berry drink for $1
and a cold soup offered at $2.

Desserts:

a chocolate one, which won best of raw food in SF. They will be $3 a piece.
and an alternative.

All of her treats come in eco-packaging- she can offer to-go boxes too if you want to take something home, or better yet bring your own container.

Tickets for the event are $10 a piece, and you will need to pay when you RSVP. You can buy food when you arrive.

Doors open at 6:15 to get food for the movie. And the movie will be shown at 7 p.m.
There will be a Q & A after the movie.

Movie lasts 90 min.
Q & A about 30 min.

BRING A CHAIR:
Please let me know if you can bring a chair, that will reduce the expense of having to rent chairs.

I’m excited! I know this will be a great event.

Here are further instructions about finding the space. 2141 Broadway has an entrance with blue mosaic tiles around it. Go directly up the stairs and turn left into the room. (There is an elevator available from a different entrance on 22nd St. if anybody needs assistance). The location is just a block from BART….exit BART at 19th Street Station. That puts you right near the Paramount Theater and walk a block and a half up from there.

ONE MORE THING- It is advisable for all meetup events to go back to the site (the calendar listing) at least the day of the event to check to see if any changes have been made. This happens from time to time. I e-mail everyone but in case you miss something, I suggest you take a last look. (very rarely will any changes be made that last day)

Darcy, organizer for the Oakland Raw Food MeetUp group

A recap of the Life Extension Conference, with Dinner

Steve Fowkes recently attended – and spoke at – the Personalized Life Extension Conference in San Francisco and felt that it was the best conference he's been to in a decade. So, he's very excited to share the conference with you, to recap the highlights, mentioned below. Hopefully some of you who will join us at the table was at the conference, too, and will share your experiences, thoughts, inspirations.

Included in this extended discussion will be one of the take-aways from the conference: how to get the health benefits of fasting without hassle, pain, inconvenience and how to avoid negative consequences such as slowing down metabolism.

These fasting plans* include:
· total fasts: water only
· partial fasts: eating only fruit, or eating low carbs, or eating one meal a day
· daily fasts: eating only one high-carb meal per day
· weekly fasts: two high-carb meals per week, which is Steve's currently favored approach
· monthly or seasonal fasts: water or juice fasting, a more traditional approach

*Length of time for a fast can be everyday, once a week, multiple days per month or per season or per year, etc.

Also included will be discussions of genetic screening (23andMe), telomere schemes, methylation, antioxidants, testing (at-home and medical), heart rate variability, meditation and yoga, micronutrients, stem cells, and cryonics.

Cost:
The talk is $40 prepaid, or $50 at the door, per person, includes dinner. See payment options, below.

The menu
a modified Paleolithic* meal

Appetizer:
Soured Roasted Onion w/Field Greens

Soup:
Roasted Cauliflower Soup w/sweetened pumpkin seeds

Main course:
Line-caught Fish served w/Citrus Herb Reduction Sauce
on a Bed of Steamed Spinach
with Braised Root Vegetables (burdock, turnips, carrots)
and Roasted Garlic ‘butter' on Zucchini Chips

Dessert:
Steve's no-guilt, high-fat, quick-burning, gluten-free
brownies (a ‘neolithic' addition to our meal)

*Paleo = old, lithic = stone
“Paleo is a simple dietary lifestyle that is based on foods being either in or out. In are the Paleolithic Era foods that we ate prior to agriculture and animal husbandry (meat, fish, shellfish, eggs, tree nuts, vegetables, roots, fruit, berries, mushrooms, etc.). Out are Neolithic Era foods that result from agriculture or animal husbandry (grains, dairy, beans/legumes, potatoes, sugar and fake foods).”

A note from Joni about the Dialog Dinners

Hosting the Dialog Dinners brings me one step closer to having a restaurant, yet allows me to offer more….. a one-of-kind tasty healthy meal… and… having a featured guest, with a group discussion, enables a growing and learning experience in an intimate setting.

Through conversations like this people share interests and ideas, and shift happens. The guest speaker leads and facilitates the conversation at the dinner table, topics include: health, consciousness, exercise, environment and living.

This brings the experience of eating out and sharing dinner with others to a whole new level.

Join me for the Dialog Dinners in Cupertino and around the Bay Area. Please contact me to suggest and/or offer to be a featured guest and/or to host a Dialog Dinner.
