this is free to first timers…

The Smart Life Forum presents:

Robert H. Lustig MD,
“The Fructose Epidemic”

With a short presentation by
Steve W. Fowkes
“Understanding the importance of basal metabolic rate”

Thursday, Oct 21st, 7pm, at the Cobberley Community Center, Room H1.

Dr. Lustig, from UCSF, is a dynamic speaker and an expert in this field, will share with us his wisdom and humor on Fructose.

Many of you have seen his UCSF's Osher talk on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.co

…this is a video of “Mini Medical School for the Public: Current Controversy in Nutrition: Letting Science be the Guide

Professor of Clinical Pediatrics, in the Division of Endocrinology Director of the Weight Assessment for Teen and Child Health (WATCH) Program at UCSF

Dr. Lustig is a nationally-recognized authority in the field of neuroendocrinology, with a specific emphasis on the regulation of energy balance by the central nervous system. He is currently investigating the contribution of biochemical, neural, hormonal, and genetic influences in the expression of the current obesity epidemic both in children and adults. He has defined a syndrome of vagally-mediated beta-cell hyperactivity which leads to insulin hypersecretion and obesity, and which is treatable by insulin suppression. This phenomenon may occur in up to 20% of the obese population. He is interested in the hypothalamic signal transduction of insulin and leptin, and how these two systems interact. He is studying the cardiovascular morbidity associated with hyperinsulinemia, and developing methods to evaluate and prevent this phenomenon in children. He is also analyzing the contribution of the autonomic nervous system to insulin secretion and insulin resistance in obese children, and the utility of assessing insulin dynamics in targeting obesity therapy.

Dr. Lustig graduated from MIT, and received his M.D. from Cornell University Medical College. He performed his pediatric residency at St. Louis Children's Hospital, and his clinical fellowship at UCSF. From there, he spent six years as a post-doctoral fellow in neuroendocrinology at The Rockefeller University in New York.

Dr. Lustig has authored over 70 research articles and 35 chapters. He is the Chairman of the Obesity Task Force of the Lawson Wilkins Pediatric Endocrine Society, a member of the Obesity Task force of The Endocrine Society, and on the Steering Committee of the International Endocrine Alliance to Combat Obesity.

Steve W. Fowkes, a nutrition expert, focusing on metabolism and reversing Alzheimer's, will give a mini-presentation on basal metabolic rate.

Here's his YouTube video on reversing Alzheimer's:

Steve Fowkes is an organic chemist, neurobiochemist, nutritional formulation consultant, legal expert witness and is considered an expert in brain function and metabolism. He has written several books, authored numerous articles and papers, illustrated books and scientific papers and served as editor, technical editor and guest editor on many more. He is currently writing his sixth book. In 1979, he co-founded a nutrition company, Vitamin Research Products and managed their research, new product development, manufacturing, data-processing and shipping departments until 1983. In 1992, he founded and continues to direct the Cognitive Enhancement Research Institute. His ability to translate technical topics for the public led to TV appearances on People are Talking, a San Francisco-based TV talk show, The Dr. Dean Edel Show, a nationally syndicated TV talk show, and CNN's Larry King Live and several anti-aging documentaries. Free: Nutritarian discussion, at Cafe Gratitude, inside Whole Foods, Cupertino

Join me, Chef Joni – your organizer, at Cafe Gratitude, for our first informal get together to discuss the term:

“Nutritarian”

….this is a term that Dr. Joel Fuhrman created to describe his diet and lifestyle. I recently heard/met Dr. Fuhrman. His approach resonates with what I've been understanding for 2 decades.

Here is the definition from his website: www.thenutritarians.com….

“Nutritarian is a term coined by Joel Fuhrman, MD. A Nutritarian is a person who strives for more micronutrients per calorie in their diet-style. A nutritarian understands that food has powerful disease-protecting and therapeutic effects and seeks to consume a broad array of micronutrients via their food choices. It is not sufficient to merely avoid fats, consume foods with a low glycemic index, lower the intake of animal produts, or eat a diet of mostly raw foods. A truly healthy diet must be micronutrient rich and the micronutrient richness must be adjusted to meet individual needs. The foods with the highest micronutrient per calorie scores are green vegetables, colorful vegetables, and fresh fruits. For optimal health and to combat disease, it is necessary to consume enough of these foods that deliver the highest concentration of nutrients.

A nutritarian is a person whose food choices are influenced by nutritional quality.”

I'm hoping that this is the first of many discussion MeetUps we'll have at Cafe Gratitude and at other locations, yet to be determined.

We'll discuss…
– the Nutritarian concept, vs Raw Food, vs Vegan, vs Vegetarian, vs the Paleolithic Diet, and others.
– the Nutritarian Food Pyramid (see image). Is it for everyone? does it work for you? what does your personal food pyramid look like?

I'll facilitate this gathering. Contact me if you are interested in facilitating a get together.

We'll meet at various times and locations, this time we'll meet at noon, Wedn, Oct 13th in Cupertino. Next, we'll meet at the Los Altos Whole Foods in the evening, I will post that MeetUp another time.
