Traveling Raw with Carmella and Don

The Oakland Raw Food MeetUp Group presents….

Traveling Raw …. with Carmella and Don

Carmella and Don are a couple from British Columbia, Canada who are touring the country and teaching raw food classes. They will be coming to our meetup on March 11th to talk about traveling raw and answering any questions anyone might have about the raw food life style. They will also be doing a demo and passing out samples for everyone to try. Their demo sounds delicious – it will be Veggies in Ginger Marinade on Zucchini Angel Hair pasta.

Fee:

They would appreciate any donations people can afford. If you can give $10-15 that would be great, if you can’t, give what you can.

Location:

Building in Oakland Second & Broadway
2141 Broadway (between 21st and 22nd St.)
Oakland, CA 94612

The venue is quite large- one of our members, Laurie Cooperman, has generously offered it to us for the evening- so as many who want to come may come. Here are further instructions about finding the space. It's the entrance that has the mosaic tiles around it. Go directly up the stairs and turn into the room on the left right at the top of the stairs (we have an elevator available from a different entrance on 22nd St. if anybody will need assistance getting up the stairs). We're just a block from BART….take the 17th St. Station but get off at the 20th/Broadway exit from the station. That puts you right near the Paramount Theater and we're a block and a half up from there.

Please RSVP only if you are sure you will be attending. The couple will be making samples for the amount of people who will be in attendance- so I'm asking again not to change your mind within the last couple of days before the event.

I hope to meet the new people who've recently joined up

“A CHEMICAL REACTION” the movie, at the Rheem Theater in Moraga

The next Green Rheem Film Night is on Thursday, March 11th and will feature the documentary:

“A CHEMICAL REACTION”

is a documentary movie that tells the story of one of the most powerful and effective community initiatives in the history of North America. It started with one lone voice in 1984. Dr. June Irwin, a dermatologist, noticed a connection between her patients’ health conditions and their exposure to chemical pesticides that include herbicides. With relentless persistence she brought her concerns to town meetings to warn her fellow citizens that the chemicals they were putting on their lawns posed severe health risks and had unknown side effects on the environment.

Wine Tasting & Appetizers in the Lobby Starting at 6pm:

– Wine tasting poured by Parkmon Vineyards in Moraga. Parkmon is a small family-owned winery dedicated to the production of world-class wines. You can also place orders for Parkmon Wines at the event and have 10% go towards Green Rheem.
– Appetizers provided by Joni Sare – chef and healthy eating coach
– EcoMetro Guides for sale

Movie Starting at 7pm:

A Chemical Reaction, is a documentary movie that tells the story of one of the most powerful and effective community initiatives in the history of North America.

Dr. Irwin’s persuasive arguments and data to back her findings eventually led the town of Hudson to enact a by-law that banned the use of all chemical pesticides and herbicides. The most mighty chemical companies in North America put their full legal weight on the tiny town and eventually the case made it to the Supreme Court. The town’s right to protect its citizens was upheld, and — like a row of dominos — other municipalities followed suit. The movement spread so far and wide that the entire province of Quebec enacted a ban and Home Depot stopped putting the dangerous pesticide products on their shelves.

Paul Turkey, one of the nation’s leading experts on organic lawn care has been following this story for years. After becoming seriously ill with acute pesticide sensitivity from applying chemical lawn products in his own lawn care business, he became an outspoken advocate for alternatives to chemical lawn care. He travels across the country lecturing on the subject and has written the nation’s leading book on organic lawn care titled, The Organic Lawn Care Manual.

This documentary follows his journey that leads to the doorstep of Hudson, Quebec. It’s an inspiring story of overcoming great odds and demonstrates the power of people coming together to effect great change in our society.

“Fascinating. Enlightening. Frightening. A Chemical Reaction kept my audience rapt with attention! This film should be required viewing.”
– Greg von Hausch, Director, Ft. Lauderdale International Film Festival

“An astounding and inspiring film. If you get a chance to catch this movie in the future, be sure to see it.”
– Molly Stone, The Free Press

“Paul Turkey is the Al Gore of lawn care.”
– Virginia Smith, Philadelphia Inquirer

Ticket options are as follows:

Movie, wine tasting, and appetizers – $10 online, $12 at theater
Movie only – $8 online, $10 at theater
