Can’t make it to Dino Day to see the South Lake Union Mammoth tusk? Come see the fossil during the last three weekends in March (Saturdays and Sundays, March 15-30).

The tusk is fully enclosed in a plaster jacket (much like a broken arm or leg wrapped in a cast), but you can still learn about the tusk’s conservation process and get a good sense of its gently curved shape and tremendous length of 8 ½ feet! Get an up-close look at other Ice Age fossils (including tusks) from the Burke’s fossil collection, or take guided mini-tours in the Life and Times of Washington State exhibit. Photos of the tusk and its journey, as well as video of it being lifted by a crane out of the AMLI Residential construction site will accompany the tusk on the weekends.

Want to help name the mammoth? Starting March 8, submit your ideas! Kids and adults alike can decorate a Seattle Mammoth coloring sheet and submit their names while visiting the Burke, or go to Seattlemammoth.org to enter and for more details about the contest. Please note: Burke paleontologists will continue to carefully monitor the tusk to ensure that it is drying properly and not getting damaged. Please check this site to see if there are any changes to the displaying of the tusk.
