Woolworths Coconut Oil

Good news if you're in Australia, Coconut Oil has just got a bit easier to find. Woolworths now stock a small jar of Spiral Coconut Oil in the Asian Foods section.

I've also seen it in Harris Farm and some IGA stores. Hopefully Coles will get in on the act and start stocking Coconut Oil soon too.

Online suppliers definitely seem to be the cheapest way to buy Coconut Oil in Australia and New Zealand, but for all those times when being organised doesn't come together, it's great to be able to buy it in a national chain.

🍳 Cooking with Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is renowned for its high smoke point and unique flavor profile, making it suitable for various cooking methods:

  • Sautéing and Stir-Frying: Its stability at high temperatures makes it excellent for sautéing vegetables or stir-frying meats.
  • Baking: Use it as a substitute for butter or other oils in baking recipes to add a subtle coconut flavor.
  • Coffee Additive: Some people add a teaspoon to their coffee for an energy boost, especially those on a keto diet.

🧴 Coconut Oil for Personal Care

Beyond the kitchen, coconut oil serves multiple purposes in personal care routines:

  • Moisturizer: Its hydrating properties make it suitable for skin moisturization.
  • Hair Care: Apply as a hair mask to nourish and add shine to your hair.
  • Makeup Remover: Its gentle nature allows for effective makeup removal without harsh chemicals.

💡 Tips for Choosing the Right Coconut Oil

When selecting coconut oil, consider the following:

  • Refined vs. Unrefined: Refined coconut oil has a neutral scent and flavor, while unrefined (virgin) retains the coconut aroma and taste.
  • Solid vs. Liquid: Solid coconut oil is ideal for baking and high-heat cooking, whereas liquid forms are convenient for dressings and personal care.
  • Organic Certification: Opting for organic ensures the product is free from pesticides and other chemicals.

📦 Storage and Shelf Life

  • Storage: Keep coconut oil in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Shelf Life: Typically, coconut oil has a shelf life of up to two years. Always check the expiration date on the packaging.

    This is great, thank you.

Any idea what the quality is like? I doubt it’s cold-pressed but judging from the whiteness of the picture it seems pretty virgin which is always good. I’ll pick one up next time I’m out, can’t go wrong for $6 haha. Thanks again.

That’s good news, I always wondered why they didn’t sell it before. I normally get mine from my local health shop but this looks cheaper.

I’m glad one supermarket is selling it, though Coles would be more convenient for me, so hope they catch on as well!

I’m surprised they haven’t yet Eileen; hopefully it will only be a matter of time before they do.

Healthy Living stores also stock a range of coconut oils (different brands and sizes). There is one located on King Street, Sydney CBD (opposite MLC Centre) for those working in the city.

I bought Coconut Oil spray recently here in Melbourne. Can’t recall whether Coles or Woolworths. Brand is ProChef. Label says extra virgin.

  6. Lori
    Lori says:

It is a pretty good one to cook with. The same company makes an extra-virgin that is to die for!!! It is heaps better, also a bit more expensive and generally in health food shops ( like Fundies in Paddington, Brisbane). It is so good I want to eat it out of the jar. The colour and smell is different from the virgin to extra-virgin. If you can find and afford the Spiral Organics Wxtra-virgin coconut oil, do it!

According to the Woolies phone app, it’s on special at the $4.79. Last day today, usually $5.99.
Thinking Woolies should also place the poroduct on the oils shelving. After all, spray coconut oil and sesame oil are there.

Most good health food stores sell good quality Coconut oil, and in bulk sizes, too. Banaban brand is good value.

anyone know where you can get Coconut Aminos from? apart from online??
    I’m based in brisbane.

    cheers!

      • Jackie
        Jackie says:

Hi Joel – I get my Coconut Aminos on iHerb – they also ship to Australia for very reasonable fees (I’m in Melbourne, and once you spend over $80 the shipping fees drop off significantly). I do most of our online dry goods shopping here – almond meal, organic canned mango/pears, organic olives, organic crushed tomatoes in amber glass jars… stuff generally hard to find here or nonexistent.
For $10 off, type in DUV741 at checkout, but I think it only works the first time you shop there.

I’ve not tried myself Aylin, but if a recipe calls for Coconut Oil, I can’t see why not!

Anyone in Qld can buy extra virgin certified organic coconut oil from Flannery’s Health food stores. Not sure if they have stores everywhere in Qld. but they have them in Brisbane and Gold Coast. Normally at $17.99 but when on special which is quite often comes down to $13 for 650ml bottle. Best I have found here.

May sound like a strange question but is the coconut oil that is used for cooking suitable to use on your skin? I have heard many people say its amazing for the skin but wasn’t sure if it was different to the one for cooking??

    • PaleoGirl
      PaleoGirl says:

Hi Lindsey, if it’s sold as cooking coconut oil, you can use it on your skin. You can use it for almost anything!

I do not recommend that oil Woolworths stock it is disgusting has no taste of coconut at all. I grew up in the islands and the closest you can get with natural organic coconut oil taste is Banaban coconut oil or the Niugini Coconut Oil.

I love the Woolworths brand coconut oil I put it on my face and I rub it into my cats fur he is white and the oil makes his coat shinny and fluffy I think it is very good for the prize and it taste nice I have it on my toast instead of butter. Well that is what I think.

      • Caz
        Caz says:

I agree … the Woolies one tastes great! And VERY “coconutty” too! I have bought Banaban in the past and I threw it out as it had a very unpleasant additional taste … almost like the smell of fuel.

I’ve just bought a 900g Spiral Organic Coconut from Woolies in Bentleigh – I normally buy Ethical Foods Organic – about a dollar more expensive. Anyway the Woolies stuff tasted really foul in comparison which is a pain as Woolies is closer to me. Hate to bring the conversation down but the Spiral Foods Oil tasted like vaseline. I love coconut oil but this stuff is pretty yucky. Maybe it’s good for cooking but I like it raw in my shakes.

  16. Ingrid
    Ingrid says:

My local Woolies and Coles stores have stocked coconut oil for several years but I find it an expensive way to buy. I buy online in bulk. I’ve tried quite a few brands, Banaban very coconutty tasting so only use in sweet baking. Melrose and Spiral are my favourite.

  17. Katie
    Katie says:

Aldi people Aldi. It’s organic unrefined cold pressed extra virgin and costs $4.99 for 300g. Obviously pretty much any Asian grocer had cheaper non organic in bulk quantities. Woollies has always had a more expensive 300g option in the health food section. At least in metro Melbourne and Sydney.

Guys, anyone tried CocoEarth “Liquid Coconut Oil”? It carries only the healthiest part of coconut oil (93% MCT) and is expeller pressed with no chemicals. Easy to use and stays liquid in cooler temperatures. Available in Coles and Woolworths (cooking oil section) and health food stores.
Check this out at CocoEarth’s official site.
