A little bit about me and this seminar

In 1996 I tried the Zone diet, also known as 30:40:30 diet  – it's a diet that focusses on eating a balance of protein, carbohydrates and fat at each meal for blood sugar, hormone and appetite control. Sears who designed it also recommended avoiding grain carbs as they have a high glycemic index. Eating this way had immediate success; my joint inflammation reduced, PMS went, I lost weight without being hungry and my mental focus improved and energy levels went through the roof. Over the years however, I found that I didn't always do so well on the zone – my knees would start to swell and I could only control inflammation with big doses of omega 3 fish oil. I still maintained my weight loss though.

In 2009 I was introduced to the paleo diet through working with CrossFit Auckland as a nutrition coach. I read Cordain's papers on the link between grains and auto-immune disease – and the penny dropped. When I cut out grains completely on my Zone diet – my inflammation reduced, when I ate them it came back. I embraced paleo eating in June 2009, from that minute – I have never had a return of my joint inflammation. I continued to combine zone principals with paleo ones as together I get great blood sugar control, no hunger, no cravings, good mental focus and great energy, whats more I maintain my lower weight easily.

In 2012 I began post grad nutrition science studies at Massey University – thankfully I'm nearly through my PGDip, and in my final papers I get to study what I want. I'm looking at the connection between auto-immune disease and paleo. This link remains a passion as I witness the remarkable health benefits of paleo for people who suffer from these debilitating illnesses where the body attacks it's own tissues.

I recently interviewed two women with Rheumatoid arthritis – a condition where the body attacks joint tissue and the joints become extremely painful and deformed. Both told me paleo (the auto-immune version) had given them dramatic reduction in pain and swelling in just two weeks.

So as you can imagine – spreading the word on the power of paleo eating in reducing health conditions is what I'm about.

Which brings me to the seminar: I bring up to date nutrition science (I read dozens of nutrition papers every week) into the seminar, I just don't rehash what other paleo bloggers are saying.

I explain the science behind paleo and a nutrient dense healthful diet.

I connect together and explain in an understandable way how modern food and lifestyle impacts on our gut, our hormones, and our health.

I show you how modern food causes dysregulated appetite and overeating, nutrient deficiencies, leaky gut and auto-immune disease, metabolic syndrome,  inflammation and diseases of aging and poor athletic performance.

We look at each food group and the best carbohydrates, proteins and fats to eat to get an anti-aging, health promoting diet – and explain why bacon is not the top of the list!

I explain why our ancient brain cannot cope with the modern food environment and why you should stop beating yourself up for you bad food habits

Carbohydrates – how much do you need? Pros and cons of very low carbohydrate diets.

How do you figure out how much to eat for health, performance and weightloss? I'll show you how.

I'll cover common mistakes people make when eating a paleo diet

Even the best paleo diet can be missing in nutrients, I'll outline those and what foods you can eat to get them.

I hope to see your at the seminar, feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Julianne[masked] or[masked]
